I keep a big, beautiful painting of the beach above my workspace, so that whenever I get bored or tired or frustrated, I can look up and take a quick mini-vacation.

Birds

I woke up this morning to find a birdhouse sitting on my lawn. I have no idea where it came from, who put it there, or what it was meant for; but within an hour, a family of bluebirds had moved into it.

For the Love of the Game

I enjoy going frisbee golfing regularly; there's some nice courses in this area. There's one course in particular where every time I throw a round, there are two guys "maintaining" the course: adding/arranging woodchips around the baskets (hole), adding stairs down steep embankments, rock paths to navigate the swampy areas.

Do, Not Say

Make a list of the things you wanted to do this summer, but haven't had the time to do. Look over that list and ask yourself, "Why haven't I done this?" Make another list of the reasons why you haven't done the things you've wanted to do, and start to think of ways to get around the inhibitors.

Rolling In

I was recently sitting on the beach one warm day when the sky began to get darker. I looked up, and saw huge, dark clouds rolling slowly over the lake – a sure thunderstorm. I just sat that and watched the storm approach, lightning flickering in the clouds, the distant boom of thunder. I waited until it hit – a sudden downpour that soaked me to the bone – and then ran back home in the rain. It was a beautiful day.

A little kindness

Holding the door for someone; greeting a stranger on the street as you pass them by; stopping your car to allow a pedestrian to cross the street, or waving another driver on as you both meet at the same intersection. These are things we can all do simply by slowing down and becoming more aware of the environment around us. And the kindness can go a long way.

Optimism

On average, pencils are seven inches long. The eraser, on the other hand, is only a half an inch long. If that isn’t optimism, I don’t know what is.
